Losing weight as a mum, while not starving yourself

As mums, we’re constantly giving. Giving our time, our energy, our love – you name it.

But somewhere along the line, a lot of mums forget to give back to themselves.

As you know, I am a huge advocate of mums taking some time for themselves. For me, that’s where the morning workouts come in.

It’s my time to reconnect with myself, to honour my body’s strength, and to remind myself that I’m more than just a mum and I can be strong, fit, and look after myself.

And let me tell you, there’s something incredibly empowering about starting the day on your own terms, with a sweat session that leaves you feeling like you can conquer the world and gives you energy literally for the rest of the day.

Investing in yourself isn’t just about the physical benefits - it’s about the mental and emotional ones too. It’s about giving yourself permission to prioritise your own well-being, to say yes to yourself when the world is screaming for your attention.

And to those who say they can’t afford to invest in their health and fitness? I get it, time and money are precious, especially when you’re juggling a million and one things at once.

But can you afford not to invest in yourself? Can you afford to keep putting your own needs on the back burner, feeling like crap about yourself, neglecting your health, and just getting in worse shape by the day, while the rest of the world marches on?

Fundamentals about losing weight

Loosing weight doesn't have to mean depriving yourself or following complicated and restricting diets and doing cardio everyday. What if I told you, you don't have to give up the food you love and exercising can easily fit into your busy schedule.

Three quick steps to start off with:

🥗 Swapping out sugary snacks for fresh fruit, gradually reducing the sugar in your tea or coffee, adding an extra serving of veggies to your meals, or simply drinking more water – these may seem like small changes, but they add up to big results over time.

💪 When it comes to exercise, consistency is key. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the idea of fitting in long workouts every day, why not start with just 15 minutes of daily movement? Whether it’s a quick walk, a few bodyweight exercises at home, or a short yoga session – every little bit counts. Small steps lead to big gains in strength, endurance, and overall well-being, and with time you’ll find that you might even want and look forward to doing longer workouts.

🧘 Don’t forget about those daily habits that contribute to your overall health and happiness. Taking a few moments to practice mindfulness or meditation, prioritising quality sleep, and finding ways to manage stress – these small rituals can have a big impact on your mental and emotional well-being.

Tips to make this happen:

Getting started when you are still excited is not the hardest part. Becoming fit and healthy and prioritising your self-care and goals is also about consistency and taking time back for you. These three tips below helped me and my clients help you consistently get closer to the fit version of yourself.

1️⃣ Strategic meal planning:

With a little planning and preparation, you can nourish your body with nutrient-dense foods that fuel your busy lifestyle. Start by batch-cooking healthy meals and snacks on weekends or evenings when you have some downtime. Invest in time-saving kitchen gadgets like a slow cooker or instant pot to whip up delicious, wholesome meals with minimal effort. Portion out your meals and snacks in advance to grab on the go during busy days. By prioritising nutrition and making it a seamless part of your routine, you can set yourself up for success without sacrificing precious time or energy!

2️⃣ Utilising compound exercises:

These multi-joint movements work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, allowing you to get more done in less time! Think squats, lunges, deadlifts, and push-ups – they’re the best for building strength and burning calories efficiently.

3️⃣ Implementing interval training for cardio:

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has gotten somewhat of a bad rap since it is NOT FUN in the moment lol, but this time-efficient workout style, which alternates between bursts of intense exercise and brief periods of rest or lower-intensity activity, is incredible for burning fat and boosting your metabolism in record time! Plus, it’s perfect for squeezing in a quick workout during nap time or while the little ones play.

Trust me and don’t underestimate the power of small steps – believe in yourself, take action, and trust that each little choice you make moves you closer to your goals. Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small. Be patient and keep going, and the results will come. ✌️
